2019 Focus – Time to get serious about digital marketing

Sometimes life has other plans and leads you down an unfamiliar or all too familiar path. It doesn’t care what your plans are and if you let it, you will emerge years later and ask yourself, “How did I get here?”

Fight or flight is a term you hear being knocked around often. The term simply refers to the brains instinct during a stressful situation. Do you stay and fight? Or do you run?

I faced redundancy at the start of 2017 from a job I absolutely loved with the Savile Row Company London as the Online Marketing Executive. This was a shock to my system especially as I wasn’t entitled to any redundancy package. I had 2 weeks pay to survive on. I had no choice but to accept the first job offer I got.

With ferocious determination, I secured a new position right at the end of that 2 week period. The role was back in retail, exactly what I sought to escape from back in 2014 when I began my studies in marketing, e-commerce, and web development. The role, however, was only a 9-month maternity cover.

In October 2017 I found myself once again without a purpose. This time though it wasn’t a shock and had already secured a new permanent role full time. Can you guess in what sector? That’s right, you guessed it, retail.

The job market just seemed to have flat lined for over two years with no opportunities in digital marketing, e-commerce or web development. Unless I was willing to do it for minimum wage. I knew my worth and held my ground until a good opportunity presented itself.

Time is something you can never get back. At the start of 2019 I find myself still in a senior retail role. Feeling undervalued, underpaid and underappreciated. A voice in my head says “Time to get serious”.

2019 is the year I get my career back on track. It’s simply not enough that I know I am experienced in digital marketing and web development. I must prove this to any prospective employer.

Google Digital Garage - The digital garage to master the art of digital marketing.

With the aim of ensuring my skills are current and relevant, I decided to obtain the introduction to digital marketing certificate of online proficiency through Google Digital Garage.

Google Digital Garage offers bite-sized topics for you to complete to master the art of digital marketing. Once you pass the online exam you can download your certificate which is accredited by the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe and The Open University.

I have already obtained an HNC in Computer & Systems Development with game and mobile app development at distinction grade. The addition of the certificate in digital marketing from Google Digital Garage will add a nice focus to my digital marketing qualifications.

The certificate in professional marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing will be my next goal for 2019. CIM qualifications are recognised Worldwide. Employers also look for CIM qualifications specifically when considering candidates for marketing and digital marketing roles.

This blog will be my home going forward. A place for me to discuss digital marketing and web development. I’d like you to join me on that journey. Feel free to leave a comment below.

Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
